The Guest Lecturer was DR. SHARON TSIGADI, GENERAL MANAGER FARMER’S CHOICE – ROSEMARK DIVISION.  The overview focused on optimal conditions for pig production, superior genetics and artificial insemination (A.I). The model that exemplified these areas of presentation was Farmer’s Choice pig production division (The Rosemark) with examples of the contract farmers and other farming communities. This presentation was extremely eye-opening and informative for both students and academic staff present.

GUEST LECTURES on “BASIC NUTRITION IN DOGS AND CATS” and on “PERSONAL BRANDING” were held on Thursday 23, 2020 in the Department of Clinical Studies. The guests were veterinarians DR. JEANNE MAKUGU, Scientific Communications Manager and DR. COLLINS PAPA OSIYA, National Sales and Marketing Manager, both from Ultravetis and Royal Canin.

GUEST LECTURE on “THE ROLE OF VETERINARIANS IN WILDLIFE CONSERVATION AND MANAGEMENT” was held on Thursday January 16, 2020 in the Department of Clinical Studies. The guest was a veterinarian DR. FRANCIS GAKUYA who is the Head, Captive Wildlife Management in the Kenya Wildlife Services.

This is a collaborative project “Initiating a Training Network and Capacity Building to Improve Control of Foot and-Mouth Disease in Kenya and Ethiopia.” The collaborating institutions include: University of Nairobi (through investigators who are academic members of the Department of Clinical Studies as well as Veterinary Pathology, Microbiology and Parasitology), Catholic University of Leuven (KU Leuven), Addis Ababa University (AAU) and Institute of Primate Research (IPR) with participation Directorate of Veterinary Services and Kenya Veterinary Vaccines Production Institute.

Our Bachelor of Wildlife Management and Conservation degree 2nd year students undertaking the Remote Sensing (RS) and Geographic Information System (GIS) course unit administered by the Department of Clinical Studies, College of Agriculture and Veterinary Sciences (CAVS), University of Nairobi, participated in three separate GIS and Remote Sensing visits in the month of November 2019 to: the Directorate of Resource Surveys and Remote Sensing (DRSRS), Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) and IGAD Climate Pr

Recently Prof. Dr. Cedric Tutt of South Africa donated to the department a Portable Digital Dental X-ray Unit. This X-ray unit was given to Prof. Susan Mbugua to deliver to the department, which she faithfully did. The department appreciates this kind of gesture by Prof. Dr. Tutt and Prof. Susan Mbugua for accepting to carry the equipment from South Africa to the department.

After the orientation exercise, all was set for learning. The first-year veterinary medicine students started off with an introduction to veterinary medicine course that serves to build their foundation into the sophisticated world of veterinary medicine.

Gender research and training is vital because sex, love, care, and reproduction are basic dimensions in life, and yet, the meaning of gender is contested.

Owing to that, lecturers from the College of Agriculture and Veterinary Sciences (CAVS) conducted gender analysis trainng to the postgraduate students and some of their supervisors.

Students from the Department of Veterinary Anatomy and Physiology had the opportunity to conduct extensive practical experiments in Toxicity studies on Paragon Insecticidal spray formulation.

Toxicity studies in the animal models are done to determine the dose level recommended for the treatment of disease. Toxicity testing is paramount in the screening of newly developed drugs before it can be used on animals.

The fifth-year Veterinary students celebrated their 2019 dinner at the Department of Clinical Studies. Such special gatherings are present an invaluable opportunity for students to meet and network with their lecturers and alumni.
