Overview
Philosophy
The programme is necessary for equipping the Graduate Veterinarian with various surgery specialty skills that would enable them tackle surgical problems in animals with hands-on precision required for good outcome. The graduate veterinarian also matches the regional and global advancement in the Surgery discipline. The programme enables one to develop skills required for effective conducting of research. The specialty areas of advancement include current concepts of principles of veterinary surgery, veterinary diagnostic imaging, soft tissue surgery, veterinary orthopedics and dentistry, anesthesiology, emergency and critical care.
Rationale
There is increasing national and regional demand for specialized surgeons who are qualified with specialty skills carry out articulate diagnoses of surgical problems in animas and do surgical operations for these problems with precision, as well as teach surgery at veterinary schools in the universities and conduct surgery-related research. The Master of Veterinary Surgery programme will meet this need by producing specialized surgeons to perform the above tasks.
The objectives of the course shall include:
- Equipping graduate veterinarians with knowledge, skills, and competence in specialized areas of Veterinary Surgery.
- Promoting aptitude and clinical proficiency of graduate veterinarians in diagnosing, operating, handling postoperative management and prognostication of animals with surgical diseases/conditions.
- Providing graduate veterinarians with opportunities to pursue careers in specialist surgical practice, research, and teaching.
- Promoting knowledge of surgical science through research and publications.

Structure
Schedule of Intake
September/October
Two (2) year full time programme consisting of two (2) academic semesters of Coursework in the first year followed by research and Thesis in the second year.
Mode of Delivery
a) Face-to-Face mode
Formal lectures, tutorials, practical demonstrations, clinical and surgical rotations handling surgical animal patients and assignments on topical subjects.
b) Open Distance and e-Learning (ODeL)
Online teaching and use of developed modules, with occasional mandatory face-to-face tutorials.
Admission Requirements
The common regulations for Masters Degree in all Faculties of the University of Nairobi shall be applicable. The following shall be eligible:
- Holders of the Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine degree of the University of Nairobi.
- Holders of a Bachelor’s degree from other Universities approved by the Senate as equivalent to the Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine degree of the University of Nairobi and be registrable with the Kenya Veterinary Board.
