Message from HoD
The Department of Clinical Studies being one of the five departments in the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, has highly trained and experienced academic members of staff teaching Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine, Bsc in Wildlife Management and Conservation, Master of Theriogenology, Msc in Wildlife Health and Management, Master of Veterinary Medicine , Master of Veterinary Surgery and PhD in Clinical Studies. The three discipline- based sections are Medicine, Surgery and Theriogenology.
The Department also offers clinical services that are divided into large and small animal services including out-patient and in-patient clinical services. The large animal clinical services include ambulatory clinic, herd health clinic, fertility clinic and community outreach activities within Nairobi and other counties. The small animal clinical services are mainly done within the departmental small animal clinic premises where clients bring in sick animals. In-patient services include admission of animals into the large animal and small animal hospital premises. The clinical services are supported by diagnostic laboratory and imaging services The laboratory services include haematology, biochemistry and bacteriology; Imaging services include X-rays and Ultrasound. Small Animal Kennel boarding and grooming services are available. Research is always on-going in the department to improve health of both productive and companion animals, which contribute to the livelihoods and security of Kenyan citizens and communities. Wildlife programmes that improve environmental management as well as research to reduce human-wildlife conflict is part the departmental mandate. Improvement of production animal reproduction and fertility is a major aim in on-going research between the Department of Clinical Studies and other Collaborators who deal with breeding and research.
The department collaborates with national institutions such as the Kenya Veterinary Association, Kenya Veterinary Board, Department of Veterinary Services, Kenya Wildlife Service and Animal Industry stakeholders. International collaboration involves partnership such as Donkey Sanctuary (UK), World Society of Protection of Animals (WSPA) and Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). The country coordination office for One Health Central and Eastern Africa (OHCEA) is hosted in the department.
