Overview
Philosophy
Medicine is a specialized clinical veterinary discipline designed for equipping veterinarians to enable them deal with diagnosis, treatment and control of disease conditions affecting animals as well as those that are zoonotic. The programme meets the demand for mitigation of animal disease challenges that impact negatively on animal productivity, reproduction and welfare. The number of veterinary specialists in this discipline is low and hence the need for this programme.
Rationale
There is high need for Specialists with skills on advanced diagnostic, treatment and disease prevention methods. This programme produces such specialists who are equipped with knowledge that makes them better-focused with regard to dealing with animal medical cases by using the correct diagnostic, treatment and disease prevention strategies. A graduate of this programme is more definite on career path focus that leads them to have research interests to perfect the Clinical Medicine skills. They are hands-on specialists that are able to mentor and train others. The quality of their services to clients is tremendously improved and result-oriented.
The objectives of the course are to produce:
- Specialists in one of the following areas; bovine medicine and herd health; ovine and caprine medicine and flock health; porcine medicine and herd health; camel medicine and herd health; equine medicine and herd health and small animal medicine, by equipping the candidate with adequate knowledge, skills, and attitudes.
- A graduate who is in tandem with regional and international trends.
- A graduate with adequate knowledge, skills, and attitudes for planning, analyzing, executing, reporting and evaluating research projects.
- A graduate who can teach and carry out research at the University and other tertiary institutions.

Structure
Schedule of Intake
September/October
Two (2) year full time programme consisting of two (2) academic semesters of Coursework in the first year followed by research and Thesis in the second year.
Mode of Delivery
a) Face-to-Face mode
Formal lectures, tutorials, practical demonstrations, clinical and surgical rotations handling surgical animal patients and assignments on topical subjects.
b) Open Distance and e-Learning (ODeL)
Online teaching and use of developed modules, with occasional mandatory face-to-face tutorials.
Admission Requirements
The common regulations for Masters Degree in all Faculties of the University of Nairobi shall be applicable. The following shall be eligible:
- Holders of the Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine degree of the University of Nairobi.
- Holders of a Bachelor’s degree from other Universities approved by the Senate as equivalent to the Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine degree of the University of Nairobi and be registrable with the Kenya Veterinary Board.
