VETERINARY EMERGENCY RESPONSE AND ANIMAL DISASTER MANAGEMENT PROGRAMS A VETERINARY EMERGENCY RESPONSE UNIT, (VERU)

Description

CSD-WSPA Disaster Management Center of excellence was established and operationalized within the University of Nairobi (UON), Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, and Clinical Studies Department (CSD) in December 2010.

The objectives of this

center of excellence are;

  1. Select veterinary students graduate with specialized knowledge, skills and core competencies in disaster management and risk reduction, that will enable them to better mitigate future catastrophes
  2. Establishment of a Veterinary Emergency Response Unit, (VERU) capable of acting as first responders during emergency situations established and operational within the department
  3. A nucleus of expertise on the management of animals in disaster cycles, strategically partners with National & International organization to develop National Disaster Mitigation Policy, and other Risk Reduction Strategies

This programme has reached over 20,000 animals in Mwingi (cattle, goats, sheep, sheep, pigs, rabbits, chicken, ducks, donkeys and camels) were helped to cope better during the drought. A very good partnership for all players established. Community livelihoods secured. The programme also responded to Sinai fire strategy and Tana -River delta inter-communal clashes.
